Q: What is open access? What is open-access journal?
A: Open access (OA) is the practice of providing unrestricted access via the Internet to peer-reviewed scholarly journal articles.
Open-access journals are scholarly journals that are available online to the reader “without financial, legal, or technical barriers other than those inseparable from gaining access to the internet itself.” Some are subsidized, and some require payment on behalf of the author. Subsidized journals are financed by an academic institution, learned society or a government information center; those requiring payment are typically financed by money made available to researchers for the purpose from a public or private funding agency, as part of a research grant.
Open-access journals (sometimes called the “gold road to open access”) are one of the two general methods for providing open access. The other one (sometimes called the “green road”) is self-archiving in a repository. The publisher of an open-access journal is known as an “open-access publisher”, and the process, “open-access publishing”.
Q: Are all the journals published by ASTAP open access?
A: Yes. All the journals published by Redfame Publishing are open access. The published articles are free to access and download. Please find the journals’ list at http://astap.net/journals/
Q: Is ASTAP a company funded by the government and the public?
A: No. ASTAP is a commercial publisher and does not receive funds from the government or the public.
Q: What’s your business model for journal publishing? Why do you charge a publication fee?
A: We follow the golden open-access model. Authors publish in our journals that provide immediate open access to all articles on the publisher’s website. The readers pay nothing, while authors (or their author’s institution or funder) pay a publishing fee used to maintain the journal operation.
ASTAP is committed to working toward a business model that:
Allows the dissemination of peer reviewed (or otherwise) manuscripts containing original research or scholarship immediately upon publication, at no charge to user groups, without requiring registration or other restrictions to access.
Requires copyright holders to allow users to “copy, use, distribute, transmit, and display the work publicly and to make and distribute derivative works, in any digital medium for any responsible purpose, subject to proper attribution of authorship…”
Q: Can you waive or reduce the publication fee?
A: Waiving the publication fee is only available to the journal reviewers and editorial members, so long as they performed the assigned review task punctually and seriously. We do not waive or reduce publication fees in any other cases.
Q: How do you use the publication fee from authors?
A: As an open-access publisher, ASTAP charges a publication fee to cover the publication costs, which covers but is not limited to the following:
– Printing
– Mailing (two copies of printed journals will be sent to the corresponding author after published, free of charge)
– DOI fee (We assign a DOI name to each article)
– CrossCheck/iThenticate fees
– Maintenance fee (article online hosting and backup)
– Labor costs (Call for papers, author services, managing peer-review, editing, publishing, and other direct works)
– Banking service
– Marketing and advertisement
– Trademark fee
Q: How do you detect the plagiarism in submissions?
A: We have a policy of “Zero Tolerance” for the plagiarism and use CrossCheck (powered by iThenticate) to check submissions..
Q: What’s your policy on self-plagiarism?
A: Attitudes about self-plagiarism are various in the academic community. However, our policy is that self-plagiarism is still plagiarism, as we encourage creativity and integrity.
Q: What about peer review?
A: We ensure that the same high standards of rigorous peer review are employed on its OA journals as are used on its subscription journals. This is upheld by the journals’ editors. Journals are members of Committee on Publishing Ethics. Each journal will have a peer review policy clearly outlined in its Submission Guidelines.
Q: Who retains copyright?
A: Authors retain copyright under the terms outlined by the Creative Commons licences while allowing others to copy, distribute, and make some uses of their work – at least non-commercially. Every Creative Commons licence also ensures authors get the credit for their work. The licences work around the world and lasts as long as applicable copyright lasts.
Q: How do I attribute when re-using content in an open access article?
If you are re-using ASTAPE OA content, it must be accompanied by an attribution that includes the following information about the original work:
– Author(s)
– Article Title
– Journal Title
– DOI
– Volume (if applicable)
– Issue (if applicable)
– Page numbers (if applicable)
– Date of publication
– ASTAP as the original publisher
